Artist in Muskoka - Janice Feist
I am a Canadian Artist who loves pigment, movement and spontaneity. My work embraces the differences between watercolour, ink, soft pastel and oil. Currently charmed with fast-drying acrylic paint, it pushes me to work with energetic impressions and abstraction while it remains wet. I love the pulling - grabbing effect of dragging paint layer over layer, the gift that wet-in-wet painting offers. Acrylic paint happily accepts scratches and scrapes for delicious variations that truly resonate with the rugged Canadian geography.
For me, painting is a moving, personal & intoxicating method of storytelling. I speak in the language of paint, using a brush, palette knife or other mark-making tools.
My work explores the effect of light & dark, colour & texture on the Canadian landscape, a sky filled with clouds, or the influence of emotion. Living in the lake-filled raw beauty of Muskoka, I am constantly inspired. I accept the challenge of conveying that magical atmosphere onto my canvas. In any case, my paintings are an extension of my experience of the moment.
Recent paintings convey the essence of the subjects, documenting less detail, instead, the emotion that each subject calls forth. In this way the work becomes even more personal, shifting the focus away from the 'notes' and moving it more towards the 'music'.
The goal with each piece is to invite the viewer to linger, look closer and experience their own feelings, with the aim that they will become immersed in the paintings and get a sense of the exhilaration that motivated me.
